MADRID (Reuters) - French striker Karim Benzema continued to shine this season after leading Real to victory in a tough match against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Sunday for the fifth round of the Spanish championship.

Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game by 64 minutes through a header, taking advantage of the cross from his team mate Danny Carvajal, to raise his tally to five goals in La Liga and top of the scorers this season.

Spanish newspaper AS has published a statistic showing how important Benzema has played recently with Real Madrid, where he managed to equalize Barcelona star Lionel Messi in the number of goals scored in La Liga in 2019.

Benzema has reached the 20th goal since the beginning of 2019, the same number of goals as Messi, also noting that the latter did not score any goal this season because of his absence from the first four games and his participation in the last game as a substitute in the second half.

Another player who has scored 20 goals in the major European leagues is Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, while Paris Saint-Germain striker Killian Mbappe and Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski are 21.

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo is in the bottom of the list, scoring only nine goals in Serie A in 2019, seven last season and two goals this season.
