Messi brings Ronaldo back again - record after best award

Barcelona and Argentina striker Lionel Messi was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 2019 by FIFA

The Argentine star received the FIFA award for the best player in the world this evening during the annual ceremony of the International Football Federation, which was held in Milan in the presence of a large number of personalities.

Messi's World Player of the Year award came despite strong competition from Juventus's Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's Virgil van Dyck.

Messi won the La Liga title last season and the Golden Boot for Europe's top scorer, but lost the competition for the Champions League and Spanish Cup.

The 32-year-old was the only player to have won the FIFA Best of the Year award, raising his tally to six against five for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lionel Messi has been awarded the World Player of the Year award for the sixth time in his professional career, more than any other footballer, beating Cristiano Ronaldo (5).

* This is the first time since 2013 that the FIFA World Player of the Year has been announced without winning the Champions League.

* Messi is the only one alongside Cristiano Ronaldo who has won the three best player of the world, FIFA World Player of the Year, FIFA Ballon d'Or and Best Player of the Year.

* Argentina are able to equal Portugal's number of titles in the World Player of the Year (6), but it is still in second place behind Brazil, which leads eight titles.

* Barcelona has extended the difference with Real Madrid again in terms of the number of titles in the award for the best player in the world, where Barca have (11) titles compared to (9) for Real and (3) for Milan.
